Directed and written by Coralie Fargeat, The Substance stars Demi Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, a once-vibrant celebrity who finds her career waning as she ages. After being dismissed from her longtime fitness show, she is introduced to a clandestine “drug” called The Substance. This serum creates a younger clone of herself — Sue (played by Margaret Qualley) — with whom she must alternate consciousness every seven days. The two selves are bound in a precarious, parasitic relationship: Elisabeth must supply stabilizing fluid to Sue, while Sue begins to thrive and ascend in Elisabeth’s old life.
From this unsettling setup, the film probes themes like identity, vanity, ageism, and the ruthless demands society places on women’s bodies.
The Substance 2024 – Not for the faint of heart
The horror is intense, grotesque, and visceral, the film doesn’t shy away from body horror at its most extreme. If you’re sensitive to gore or body mutilation, The Substance is going to push you.
Some critics caution that the emphasis on shock and spectacle can, at times, overshadow emotional connection.
